It's a New Year and we are still dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Not to fear because Lucy is here and the first step we are going to take in order to stay healthy, is to ditch the sugar.
The reason is an easy one, viruses crave sugar as well, as a matter of fact, they thrive on it. This fact is a game changer on our journey to becoming the healthiest version of ourselves; while staying healthy during a history making pandemic. It is vital to get rid of refined sugars in the diet. In other words, the white stuff, crap food which is devoid of any nutritional value. Scientific research supports the fact that sugar consumption contributes to chronic inflammation and impacts how well a person can fight against the coronavirus.
To all my sugar loving, sweet tooth friends, there are healthy ways around what seems like tragic news. There is an array of whole food choices that can fill in the gap with a heck of a lot of nutrition and sweetness as well. Eating healthy is not boring but extremely satisfying and delicious. Try one of these sweet snack alternatives:
- Fruits in season
- Baked Sweet Potato
- Homemade applesauce
- Trail mix with dark chocolate bits
- Chia pudding topped with fruit
- DIY Energy Balls
It may surprise you if you don't remember high school biology, but the human body uses glucose (the fundamental building block of sugar) for energy and this is the most important source of energy for optimal brain and body function. The good news is that we don't want to eliminate all sugar from the diet but we do want to swap for healthier alternatives.
My other healthy tips to manage sugar cravings:
- Add healthy fats and quality proteins to a plant based diet
- Manage stress with deep breathing exercises and stretching
- Get rid of sugary drinks and drink more water
- Move your body
- Get enough sleep
- Don't skip your meals
- Eat your meals in a relaxed state
